Walter Benjamin’s radio broadcasts constitute a significant part of his oeuvre. In the years between 1927 and 1933, he created and delivered about 80 broadcasts in various formats, programm sections and on a broad spectrum of topics. His practical work for the radio was accompanied by insightful theoretical reflections on the newly evolving medium. And yet, these texts have not yet been edited comprehensively, nor did they gain much attention in the academic world.
The volume Rundfunkarbeiten / radio works that Thomas Küpper and Anja Nowak edited within the framework of the new critical edition (Werke und Nachlass) assembles all radio-related works by Benjamin for the very first time. It also gives information on the historical background, the sources and the broadcasting context. Publishing the primary texts alongside the various sketches and research notes, the book provides insight into an important segment of Benjamin’s work and builds the basis for more in-depth research on the topic.
